A total of 155 subjects in the first through third grades of junior high school were divided into three groups according to the duration of exercise: an exercise group, an intermediate group, and a non-exercise group. The relationship between body composition (fat free mass: FFM, fat mass: FM), body composition index (fat free mass index: FFMI, fat mass index: FMI) and physical fitness tests (8 items) was examined. Body composition was measured using a body composition analyzer (InBody 470). The results showed that the exercise group had higher values in FFM and FFMI, while the non-exercise group had higher values in FMI. In the physical fitness test, the exercise group showed significantly higher values in all items. The relationship between FFMI and the items of the physical fitness test in the exercise group showed correlations in seven items except for the 20m shuttle run. However, in the non-exercise group, there was a correlation between FMI and the new physical fitness test in many items. These results indicate that FFMI has a positive effect on body composition and physical fitness, as well as on physical fitness test records, when exercise is performed. Conversely, the non-exercise group showed a negative effect of FMI with the physical fitness test.
