Since its first publication in 1936, the translation has been revised four times by six publishing houses. This paper analyzes the main features of each version by comparing the differences among them. Although the first edition deletes the professional terms related to the Japanese opera in the original work, it is faithful to its original translation. In the second edition, the translator Gulu modified the relevant expressions in the original work that did not conform to socialist ideology. The translator corrected the sentence misunderstandings in the original work, used the most recent research to correct the errors, and added a large amount of theatrical materials, including his own filming done in major Japanese libraries. These revisions are important in my view. The third edition was mainly revised by Tan Zhengbi. He replaced Wang Gulu, who was suffering from severe hypertension at the time, to correct the incorrect opera names and add new opera materials to the original work. The fourth edition was revised after Wang Gulu’s condition improved. He made more than 120 corrections of the typos, punctuation, and sentence errors present in the third edition and added several recent research results.
