Taro Kageyama’s conceptualization of the "verbal noun" is speculative and leads to issues with its ambiguous extension. Although subsequent research has examined the extension of verbal nouns, the conclusions still deviate from linguistic facts. The fundamental problem with both intentional and extensional concepts lies in their failure to distinguish between the community language system level and the specific level of language use. Taking the Two-level Lexical Categorization Theory perspective this study analyzes the “Modern Japanese High-Frequency Sino-Japanese Word Class Information Annotation Database” and ultimately reveals that the so-called “verbal noun” is lexically categorized as a noun-verb hybrid by the dictionaries. At the level of the actual language use, it is employed either as a noun or a verb. Therefore, reanalyzing the so-called “verbal noun” as a noun-verb hybrid is not only more reasonable but also aligns better with the linguistic realities within the Japanese community.}, pages = {89--101}, title = {日语“动名词”的概念问题与重新分析}, volume = {17}, year = {2024} }
