The aim of this study is to investigate the possibility of discrimination between gum arabic and animal protein-based binders used in ancient wall paintings in the mastaba of Idout, Saqqara and to recognize the mixtures of the two products. In the present study, three methods of sample preparation and injection in gas chromatograph-mass spectrometry (GC/MS) were used. The three methods: liquid injection, pyrolysis (Py), and thermally assisted hydrolysis and methylation (THM), were tested for the most highly sensitive detection of the organic binding media. The GC/MS results showed that the liquid injection could not detect the natural products, but Py-GC/MS method was detected hydrocarbon and pyrrol, and THM-GC/MS method was detected fatty-acid methyl esters. It was found that the samples include much lauric acid methyl ester and myristic acid methyl ester. These suggested that the mixture of wax and animal glue was used as the organic binding
