The present work summarizes the results of seven years of treatments for conservation of the wall paintings created in the burial chamber of Idout's tomb. Paintings of the West, East and North walls suffered from several severe problems of deterioration resulting in the painted plaster only being preserved in fragments. A large area of the plaster had already fallen off the walls. It is clear that the usual methods of conservation cannot be applied to this tomb because of its bad condition. Detachment of the paintings of these walls from their harmful support was the only solution, and therefore, the fragments were detached from the walls. Their back side was sanded down, leveled, consolidated and lined with a cotton canvas and polyvinyl acetate glue. An intervention layer and auxiliary support were applied, and their extensions were cut down. The facing was removed and the cavities filled with white. acrylic mortar. Handles were stuck to the back of the pieces with epoxy resin and the paintings were reattached, tentatively, back on the walls. In contrast, the state of preservation of the paintings on the South wall is slightly better than on the other walls. However, the paintings have still suffered from several problems; the support has a large absorptivity; the plaster ground has a lot of fine fractures; the ground has been separated from the wall; there was the presence of brown patches on the surface of painting layer, and the pictorial surface showed many fractures. Accordingly, an in situ treatment using Nanorestore, as an adhesive material. for conservation of the South wall was carried out in 2012. Nanorestore was applied to consolidate both the painting and the support by an injection method. Paraloid B-72 with a different concentration was also used to reduce absorptivity, to help in the consolidation of the support, to improve the adhesion of Malta 6001 to the support and to fill in the cleavages. Malta 6001 was used to fill in the air pockets between the painted plaster and the rock support. Preventol RI 80 biocide was used as an antifungal to disinfect the brown patches present on the surface of painting layer by spraying three times. |
