内容記述 | Ancient Egyptians believed that the deceased could have some kind of influence over the living, and the evil-deed of a dead person caused matter that baffled them such as: misfortunes, diseases, arguments over property, and poverties. The living sent messages to their dead relatives through papyri, steles, linens, jar-stands and bowls of offering at the graves or tombes in necropolis in order to avert this kind of misfortune. Those messages/ letters were called by present-day Egyptologists "Letter to the Dead." Here, I re-examined two letters of papyrus: NagꜤ el-Deir N3500, and NagꜤ el-Deir 3737. I analyzed the letters from philological and elucidatory aspects to determine what the letters meant from the viewpoint of the living. As a result, I believe that the writer of the first letter NagꜤ l-Deir N3500 wrote that in order to stop the misfortune from one dead person, he needed to add the name of a second dead person stronger than the one who was already causing him the misfortune. In the second letter NagrꜤ l-Deir 3737, the writer Heni thought that a living, Seni, was his culprit, so he wrote to a dead person to stop Seni's evil-deeds. The living thought that the dead could be malicious or beneficial as the iving were. | |||||||||
