In Egypt, it has recently been reported that a number of cultural properties and heritages are contaminated with molds. In December 2008, one of the authors visited some of those to survey the actual situations for contaminants to develop an effective decontamination method. Some molds were isolated from the small samples taken from debris at Idout in Saqqara. Behbeit el Haggar Temple heritage, and Quaitbay Citadel in Alexandria by using M40Y and PDA plates. We selected one of the strains isolated, B 1-3, which seems to be a xerophilic Aspergillus strain from its growth characteristics. Supposing a possibility of use of n-alkanols for mold decontamination, we investigated the resistance of B 1-3 strain to these compounds. After small paper disks inoculated with the spore suspension were placed at the center of a PDA plate containing different concentrations of either n-alkanol, the plates were incubated at 30℃. The area of colony was measured periodically during the cultivation period to evaluate the antifungal activities of n-alkanols. We analyzed the mold's resistance to n-alkanols by using parameters such as the growth rate defined as the rate of an increase in the colony area, the alkanol concentration-dependency of the growth rate, and the dependency of alkyl chain-length in the alkanol molecule upon the inhibitory activity. As a result, the antifungal activity of n-alkanol was suggested to be profoundly affected by the hydrophobicity of both the surface of mold spore and the n-alkanol molecule. |
