概要
内容記述タイプ Other
内容記述 The purpose of this paper is to compare and analyze the unique characteristics of Priapus, a deity from ancient Roman mythology, and Min, a deity from ancient Egyptian mythology, and to make clear the similarities of spiritual life surrounding religions in ancient Greece, Rome, and Egypt. While focusing on the fact that the gods of Greece and Rome had their origin in Egypt-Herodotus and other ancient Greek and Roman writers recorded that these gods were also worshipped in Egypt -this paper will examine the myths and legends related to these two gods and will also mention extensive similarities from the viewpoint of cultural anthropology. Perhaps because Min is regarded as the god from whom Priapus derived, these two gods share many similar elements in terms of nature and form. In addition to being gods of agriculture, abundant harvests, and sexual ability, they are personified in iconic images in which they symbolize worship of the phallus. In this way, they are depicted as having similar characteristics. Priapus is a motif that was beloved even in ancient Roman literature, but according to Virgil, his origins were in the Orient at the Dardanelles Strait. Many different opinions exist regarding the relationship between Priapus and other gods, but he is firmly associated with deities such as Dionysus, Aphrodite, and Adonis -gods with many legends related to plants, trees, gardens, and sexual love. On the other hand, an extremely strong connection can be seen between Min, the god of agriculture and abundant harvests who was associated with lettuce and fragrance, and Osiris, the god of plants. Osiris is particularly known from the phallic myth concerning the goddess Isis and the birth of her son Horus. According to the writings of Diodorus, Osiris was the same god as Dionysus, and worship of the lost phallus of Osiris directly became worship of Priapus. In James George Frazer's The Golden Bough, Osiris is identified with the Phrygian deity Attis and the Syrian deity Adonis. It can be pointed out that the relationship between and roles of Isis, the mother goddess, and Osiris, the male god of agriculture, resemble the relationship between and roles of Cybele and Attis, and Aphrodite and Adonis. In Frazer's interpretive model regarding agricultural rites (the sacred marriage), the character of Osiris, the god of death and rebirth, is explained via the agricultural ritual to pray for abundant harvests called the "Sed festival", in which Osiris was worshipped. It is worth noting that, in certain eras, Min replaced Osiris as the deity worshipped at the Sed festival. A temple dedicated to Isis was discovered in Pompeii, showing that the worship of Isis flourished in ancient Rome. From this, we can infer that there was a foundation of worship of mother goddesses such as Isis (Aphrodite). We can also guess that the legends of Isis and Osiris having been transmitted in a variety of forms resulted in Priapus, Min, and Osiris - who were initially undifferentiated as deities of agriculture and phallic worship - spreading to Greece and Rome.
