| 内容記述 | The Edo-period joruri (narrative drama) work Kanadehon Chushingura (The Treasury of Loyal Retainers) was translated into Chinese twice in the course of the 18th century. The first of these translations was Chushingura Engi (An Adaptation of The Treasury of Loyal Retainers) by Shu Bunjiemon, a Chinese-Japanese interpreter in Nagasaki. The second translation, based on this text, was published as Kaigai Kidan (Tales of the Strange). The question of who produced this second translation has still not been clearly resolved. If the identity of the translator could be determined, it would enable a more accurate assessment of the value and unique qualities of the text itself, while at the same time shedding further light on the Japanese assimilation of Chinese language during the Edo period. This paper builds on the author's prior research to take a fresh look at the derivation of the phraseology employed in Kaigai Kidan to analyze how certain characteristic phrases were incorporated into the text of the translation, and uses these derivations as the basis for offering the author’s conjectures as to the authorship of this text. | |||||
