| 内容記述 | This paper examines the seated statue of Shotoku Taishi, enshrined in Shoryoin-in at Horyu-ji, Nara. Supposedly built at the beginning of the 12th century, it is a famous statue of Shotoku Taishi in the Heian period. The statue is a combination of what are known as shomangyo (Śrīmālādevī Sūtra) kosan-zo (seated statue) and sessho-zo (standing statue), looking straight ahead with a crown on his head, a hakama on his body, and rods in his hands. It is a bit enigmatic as to what this statue was really about. "Shotoku Taishi den shiki (Personal account of the life of Shotoku Taishi)," written by Kenshin, a monk at Horyu-ji in the Kamakura period, is worth noting to better understand this statue. Kenshin roclaims himself to be the twenty-eighth generation descendent of Choshimaru, a servant of Shotoku Taishi, and is among those who contributed to the restoration of Horyu-ji. This paper reveals the historic meaning of the statue by closely examining Kenshin's references to the statue in his "Shotoku Taishi den shiki" and by comparing this statue with Shotoku-Taishi shomangyo kosan-zo that are seen in other places. | |||||
