 note = {The Hakuen Library houses many book collection seals with a variety of uniquely impressed ownership stamps. In particular, nine stamp pictures made from a Japanese seal-engraving specialist, Maruyama Daiu (円山大迂) (1833-1916) attract special attention; one of them is the private seal of Fujisawa Nangaku (藤澤南岳先生) and it holds information on the date and the year. Two of the pictures are huge stamp pictures dedicated to 大村屯. Precious Green Guangdong Stones (広東綠) were used as a raw material for the seals; therefore, these stamps are indeed rare treasures. Maruyama was originally from Nagoya and his pen-name is 真逸 with 学歩庵 as his name as an artist. He is the author of 学歩庵印蛻. Wu Changshuo (吴昌碩) is the founder and first President of the Xiling Society of Seal Arts, and he created a title logo of 学歩庵印蛻 in Tensho 篆書 (ancient seal characters) for the author. In 1878 (the 11th year of the Meiji era), Maruyama went overseas to study under 徐三庚 (1826-1890) in China (Qing) where he had lived for over ten years. It is reported that he returned to Japan to impart the skills and technical knowledge of a new seal cutting (Tenkoku) method (双鋒平口刻刀法) to learners or members of 日本篆刻界 (Japanese Tenkoku Association). Maruyama's works in the Tenkoku art were highly appreciated by 湖南先生, who wrote a preface to the book entitled 学歩庵印蛻. Among the seals of Chinese people (中国印人), the signature and seal, 子昂, is seen on the 65th seal stone in the Hakuen collection. 子昂 is a pen-name for Zhao Mengfu (趙孟頫), who was a great painter as well as a great poet in Yuan era in China. Zhao Mengfu is also known for his excellent works in 篆刻 (seal cutting) and thus, he is an important figure in the Chinese history of art. Unfortunately, some researchers claim that the authentic stamps of Zhao Mengfu no longer exist. If this is true, the 65th seal stone kept in the Hakuen collection has never been shown in public, and this seal stone may be called the phantom stamp.},
