After MASUDA and KARASHIMA graduated from the university, their careers contrasted as if to reflect light and shadow. MASUDA had been engaged in translation of a variety of Chinese books, working with SATO Haruo who was a famous writer and known as one of the leading figures in Japan's literary world at that time. This translation experience and association with SATO was the start of MASUDA's career in business. MASUDA went to Shanghai for study, where he met ROJIN, a Chinese writer with exceptional talent, and they became good friends for the rest of their lives. In addition, MASUDA left a name for himself as a successful translator of 中国小説史略 (A Brief History of Chinese Fiction) written by ROJIN. On the other hand, KARASHIMA went to Korea to become a university professor at Keijou Imperial University as soon as he graduated from the University of Tokyo. While working at the university, KARASHIMA was involved in the study of Chinese classical literature, and his interests moved to ethnic issues on the Asian continent. In studying Chinese literature, his concern gradually shifted toward modern literature rather than literature in a colloquial style. Consequently, KARASHIMA started working on the translation of 中国小説史略 earlier than MASUDA did, but KARASHIMA abandoned his translation project because he had to accept the request of MASUDA who asked him to hand over the translation. This article describes how MASUDA and KARASHIMA, who had been good friends as well as rivals, were associated with ROJIN and why they had to move apart from each other. In addition, their trajectory of life is reviewed based on their own records and by memories of the people who had known them.
