概要
内容記述タイプ Other
内容記述 In the latter half of the 19th century, Japan and China clashed over administration of the Ryukyu Islands and the issue of the Korean peninsula. At the same time, however, the view that Japan and China should act in concert to resist the West was evident within the government and citizenry of both Japan and China; also evident were a climate of thought and movements to facilitate this partnership between Japan and China. In contrast to viewing Japan and China as clashing at the time, this paper focuses on the various "Alliance with Japan" views evident in China prior to the Sino-Japanese War, and it depicts the aspects of their origins, development, and phases overall within the historical context of drastic changes that took place within international affairs in 19th century Asia. As the Qing Dynasty was being brought into the international community and its traditional political system was collapsing, the "Alliance with Japan" views appeared as a response to the transformation of the political order in East Asia and a way of maintaining the imperial tributary system (lit. "civilized" China vs. "the barbarians"). With the exception of a minority view held by journalists stressing a true Sino-Japanese partnership, most of the debate centered on only one type of strategy. This strategy was not for China to cooperate or ally with Japan but instead to make a feint or use Japan. Overall, the "Alliance with Japan" views that appeared in China prior to the Sino-Japanese War differed from the "Develop with Asia" doctrine (興亜論) of Meiji-era Japan. These views also differed from the "Alliance with Japan" doctrine found in China after the Sino-Japanese War and were definitely not an espousing of Asianism.
