One can examine whether or not Japanese wage determination, known as the Seniority-Merit Wage System, which is peculiar to large firms, is still working effectively despite such factors as the current economic recession, technological change, modified labour practices, etc. This paper consists of (1)Presentation, (2)Characteristics of Japanese Wage System and (3)Japanese Wage Structure Model. The next study is supposed to compare existing wage determination models or method in Japan and the resulting wage structures with those in other similarly industrialized countries.
