Subjects were asked to rate the extent to which each of 26 main non-helping motives is thought to restrain the occurrence of 12 typical helping behaviors. Factor analysls of the rating data showed 5 fundamental non-helping motives : the denial of responsibility through the rational judgement of situations, unpleasant experiences of helping or being helped, undesirable characteristlcs of potential helper or helpee, the possibility of diffusion of responsibility, and the inability of helping. It was determined which non-helping motives control(s) the different helping behaviors.
