From old time wormseed imported into Japan from China as a remedy for ascarides and also imported from Dutch Trade in the last stage of Edo Period(1842-61). The effective ingredient of wormseed was extracted as santonin in 1830. In Japan santonin from A.monogyna was extracted and selled by Nihonshinyaku Co. in 1940. In 1954 Takeda Research Laboratory succeeded in synthetic production but did not built the synthetic plant. Another ascarid is a seaweed Makuri Digenea simplex distributed in southern part of Japan. Effective ingredient of Makuri is founded as kainic acid in 1953. Chemical formula and total synthesis were succeeded by research workers of Takeda and Fujisawa in 1955-57.
