C-SPAN began with the airing of plenary sessions of the House of Representatives and afterward it was supplemented with congressional committee and subcommittee hearings. Today C-SPAN is covering a wide variety of other events in public affairs. In a democratic society, it is indispensable to make known to the public the discusssions in Congress. The journalistic activities of mass media have been playing a role in this type of reporting. However, a different type of journalism has also appeared which is devoted to unedited, \"gavel-to-gavel\", commentary-free coverage of public affairs. This is what C-SPAN itself calls \"alternative journalism\". In Japan we have no networks like C-SPAN.
