In contrast, modernization in China has been based on learning gained from traditions. This is especially true in the medical sciences, as can be seen from the fact that the Chinese Academy of Traditional Chinese Medicine(CATCM), an overall research association established in 1955, is the largest national research center except for the Chinese Academy of Medical Sciences. The CATCM consists of ten Institutes, including; Medical History and Literature, Medical Information, Chinese Meteria Medica, Basic Theory of Traditional Chinese Medicine(TCM), Acupuncture and Moxibustion, Orthopedics and Traum atology, four Institutes of Clnical Medicine(in Xi-Yuan and Guang-An Men Hospital), and the CATCM Journal Publishing House. At present(1991), there are over four thousand staff members working on research related to TCM. There are also a total of 121 medical colleges, including 29 TCM colleges. The number of doctors working in the field of TCM are about 1/3 of the total number of doctors.
