But, the mere emphasis of the novelty of such ideas, however, did not bring about the replacement of the traditional system with the newly imported European astronomy in the 1610's. Replacement remained impossible task prior to the arrival of the Tychonic system in the 1620's, because the Jesuit missionaries were not yet ready to take responsibility for it. Xu Guang-qi, on the other hand, was later able to emphasize the accuracy of the newly arrived astronomical knowledge at the beginning of the compilation of the Astronomical Encyclopedia from the West, because he then had both scientific materials and missionaries at his disposal. We must read Xu Guang-qi's comment,' to exceed the previous methods', in this context, through which he implies a conviction Long shared by Chinese astronomers and scholars. In the framework of traditional astronomy in China, for more than a millennium before the seventeenth century, the desire for increased accuracy had always provided a sort of psychological drive to improve the precision of astronomical theories and numerical constants.
