Husbands and wives support their families in roles exchanged for gender. I studied 17 provisional factors of gender to compare with the West on the social systems, family institutions, culture and values and so on. There is a feature of feminism in Japan which advocates' the protection of material rights'. It is signficant for women to filfill female roles, such as child birth, child-rearing and nursing of the elderly. In Japanese society with regular division of gender roles, the percentage of working women has been static since 1920; it has been about 50% of all women and 40% of the entire working population. The percentage of nonworking housewives has been continueing around 30% since 1950. The structual changes in industrial society have shifted the female labor force from family worker to employee and a phenomenon of 'the feminization of employment' has occurred. It is unlikey that the M-curve work pattern will change in the near future. Japanese society was established a policy of gender protection, family allowance etc., as evidence of its economic efficiency in an acceptable society based on gender roles. Japan has formed its economic systems based on the traditional family community which is different from those in the West.
