Subjects were presented these pictures and were required to estimate the magnitudes of the activities and to decide if an emotion of surprise could be detected there. The estimates of the magnitudes increased linearly for facial activities, while a sudden increase was found in the capabilities of detecting the emotion. The results were interpreted as indicating that the face recognition was attained by categorical separation of the stages of expressing emotion from the neutral state of a face.
