Compared to the students, teachers perceived a declining role of parents in instilling values, had a greater sense of crisis concerning public safety and national security, and showed more interest in politics. Subjects classified as materialistic were proud to be Japanese and trusted the social system with regard to education, the law, and the media. Non-materialists believed that Japan was losing its spirit of mutual aid, concern for other peoples, and understanding of different races and ways of thinking.
