There were several conditions in this study. In the control condition the questionnaire was sent without a pre-notification or a reminder. The effects of a pre-notification and/or one or more reminders were examined in some of the other experimental conditions. When a pre-notification and/or reminder postcards were used, the return rates were significantly higher than those obtained in the control condition. It was found that the increase in the return rates attributed to the pre-notification was approximately equal to the increase resulting from one reminder. This replicates findings of mail surveys in the United States. Based on these findings, it is recommended that a pre-notification plus one or more reminders should be used in order to increase return rates.
