| 内容記述 | ロウドは， 「神は人間を神の似姿として作られ，従って，人間には知識と正しさがあった。人間はこれをアダムの罪によって完全に失ったのではないけれども， しかし，福音の完全に到るためには信仰と悔い改めが必要である｡」という考えを基にして， 「悪徳と誤りの守護者」無神論者を批判し，その代表者として社会にふさわしくない個人が生き続けること」を大前提とするホッブズを批判した。ロックに対しては，神の存在証明を評価したが，徳・悪徳を称賛・非難に基づかせているところ， 「生まれながらの原理はない」という主張，一般公準についての考えを批判した。ロックの反論は，第一の点に関しては，成功していない。エドワーズ（匿名）は， ロックの宗教論争において，ステイリングフリート，エドワーズの言い分をほぼ全面的に認め， ロックの言い分は何も認めていない。こうしてロックはソッツィーニ派の支持者とされ，ホッブズと同じ考えの懐疑論者と断定された。 | |||||

| 内容記述 | Lowde thought that God created man in his own image, so that in man existed knowledge and righteousness, which man has not wholly lost by the sin of Adam, but that faith and repentance have come to be absolutely necessary to reach evangelical perfection, and on the basis of this thought he criticized atheists, "patrons of vice and error", especially their representative Hobbes who set up as the fundamental principle "self-preservation of man born unfit for society". As for Locke, Lowde approved of his demonstration of the existence of a God, but criticized his founding virtue and vice on praise or blame, his assertion that there are no innate principles, and his thought on general maxims. Locke's counter argument against the first point is invalid. Edwards(anon.) almost wholly accepted Stillingfleet's and Edwards's arguments in their respective religious controversies with Locke, and completely neglected Locke's. Thus he considered Locke a friend to Socinianism, and asserted that he was a sceptic with some of Hobbes's very thoughts. | |||||
