Though the success of local currency could be defined with reference to several functions, frequency in use of local currency was taken as a major index of success. In order to elucidate conditions for success of local currency, a survey using e-mail was conducted for steering committees in Japan. Information regarding frequency in use, number of members, membership requirements, scope of the member's circle, availability for shopping in local stores, etc. was evaluated. The application of Boolean algebra in the analysis ( =\"comparative methods\") showed that the availability for shopping in local stores was one key to success. It was also found that the conditions for success could be reduced to three main types: stimulating local economic activity in an urban area, assisting volunteer activity in an urban area, and activating the local community in an rural area.
