概要
内容記述タイプ Other
内容記述 The China Merchant's Steam Navigation Co. (C.M.S.N.Co.), a steamship company in China established in November, 1872 based on the proposal of Li Hong Zhang at the end of the Qing Dynasty, later developed to become one of the leading steamship companies of East Asia along with Japan's Nippon Yusen K.K. which was established in September, 1885. In Japan, Mitsubishi Comapany, which was the predecessor of Nippon Yusen K.K., opened a regular line from Yokohama to Shanghai via Kobe, Shimonoseki, and Nagasaki, as Japan's first overseas line in January, 1875. This line continued to operate even after Mitsubishi Company became Nippon Yusen K.K. and developed into one of the important overseas lines. On the other hand, C.M.S.N.Co. attempted to establish a Japan line by utilizing different steamships such as the Aden in 1873, the Tahyew in 1877, the Hwaiyuen in 1882, and the Hae-ting and the Chi-yenh in 1886. However, all of these operations were intermittent, not at all regular operations. In particular, the reason why C.M.S.N.Co. began service of two steamships, the Hae-ting and the Chi-yen, to Japan bound for Nagasaki, Kobe, and Yokohama in 1886 is deemed to be its attempt to open a regular Japan line from Shanghai. However, their plan met strong resistance from the Japanese side. In particular, Japan required that Japanese passengers who wanted to travel within Japan on a C.M.S.N.Co.'s steamship, namely to travel, for instance, from Nagasaki to Kobe or from Yokohama to Kobe, strictly observe rule No. 30 of the Proclamation of Grand Minister of State, "Overseas Ship Boarding Rules" enforced as of March 18, 1876. Because of this, these ships did not achieve the expected operation conditions and C.M.S.N.Co. abandoned its plan to open a regular line between Shanghai and Japan.
