内容記述 | Upon conclusion of the Qing dynasty Tianjin Treaty with Britain, France, the U.S.A., and Russia, the two ports, Ampin in the southern part of Taiwan and Tansui in the northern part, were opened to foreign countries in 1860 and foreign ships started to arrive. Then in 1863, Takao and Kilurn, affiliated to Ampin and Tansui, respectively, were opened. More and more foreign merchant ships came to Taiwan. In those days the regular steamship line between Taiwan and Mainland China was opened by Douglas Steamship Co., Ltd. , a British company founded in Hong Kong in 1863. It was a pioneer company providing service between Taiwan and Mainland China. Douglas Steamship Co., Ltd. was founded by Douglas Lapraik. Soon after he arrived in Hong Kong, he opened a watchmaker's store handling chronometers for ships. Then he established Douglas Steamship Co., Ltd. and owned steamships for the trading with China and further western countries. In 1869, the company started serving the regular line between Xiamen and Taiwan, and it also opened a line connecting Hong Kong with Taiwan, Fuzhou in Fujian Province, and Xiamen. Based in Hong Kong, Douglas Steamship Co., Ltd. monopolized the regular steamship lines between Mainland China and Taiwan for a while. When Qing Dynasty concluded Sino-Japanese Treaty in Shimonoseki and Taiwan became under Japanese rule in 1895, Osaka Shosen Co., Ltd. of Japan made inroads into Taiwan shipping lanes. Thus, Douglas Steamship Co., Ltd. was forced into severe competition against Osaka Shosen Co., Ltd. in providing service between Taiwan and Mainland China. This paper discusses how Douglas Steamship Co., Ltd. operated the line between Southern China and Taiwan before and right after the start of Japanese rule over Taiwan. | |||||
