| 内容記述 | Since the Meiji Era, the watermills became taxable by local governments and eligible to pay watermill taxes provided by the law. This led to the necessity of submitting applications for establishing them and of notices of abolishing them. In Kanagawa Prefecture, except for Yokohama District which was rapidly modernized since the Meiji Era, there existed a lot of watermills especially in hilly or mountainous villages in the middle and western parts of the prefecture. The application and notification documents for these watermills in the Meiji-Taisho Era are preserved in some 'gun' (county) offices, which amount to 211 volumes. The findings from those documents are as follows. In Kanagawa Prefecture, there were more non-irrigated fields than paddy fields, so the production of wheat, barley and millet exceeded that of rice. The watermills were used for flour-making and grain crushing rather than for rice cleaning. Also, as the silk raising was popular, nearly half of them were used for silk reeling, yarn twisting, and silk weaving. There were also timber mills in the mountains. | |||||
