| 内容記述 | The permissions of prefectural offices were required to build water mills. The application documents are preserved in the form of files in prefectural offices, and they are very informative when we research on the usages of water mills in Japan. At the prefectural office of Nagasaki, there are documents from two different periods, from 1885 to 1886 before the Industrial Revolution and from 1902 to 1910 at the peak of the Industrial Revolution, which show the history of water mills in Nagasaki Prefecture. In Nagasaki Prefecture, most water mills were used for cleaning rice and making flour as was done all over Japan. The water mills in Nishiariye Village on Shirnabara Peninsula where there were 26 of them, the largest number in the prefecture, were specialized in grinding wheat to make fine noodles, the local speciality. In Shimabara Peninsula, there were also sugarcane crushing mills and vegetable wax producing mills in the period of 1885 to 1886. In the pottery area adjacent to Arita-Irnari, they still used clay mills in the period of 1902 to 1910. Also, in the suburbs of Nagasaki City, there were gold ore stamping mills to be used in small gold mines. In the town of Shimabara, timber mills were also constructed. | |||||
