 note = {The purpose of this study is to reveal new aspects of "self." We consider "self" as dynamic and socially constructive. From this viewpoint, the representation of self is based on an understanding what kind of situation we are in. To examine this hypothesis, an experiment was conducted, in which informants were asked to explain their self - what kind of person they want to be understood as - in two different situations by writing essays. These essays addresed the following three points: 1) when informants pay attention the asymmetric relations in their situation, they tend to present appealing aspects of self, 2) when informants regard symmetric relations as important in their situation, they tend to present affiliative aspects of self, and 3) when informants are interested in increased friendship with particular persons, they tend to disclose negative aspects of self.},
