内容記述 | Most hikers have experienced losing their way in the mountains. When they do not return home at the expected time, their family or acquaintances ask the police to help search for them. Many people may be involved in a search and rescue, for extended periods each day, to reduce the risk of starvation, frost bite, injury or death. I examined two mechanisms by which one may become lost: loss of sense of direction without a compass; and loss of spatial orientation with respect to a map. Two types of tests (D-test, P-test) were used to determine a hiker's sense of direction and ability to orient on a map. The D-test measured the direction-angles of three landscape objects as a subject moved along a 1.8km test trail. The objects were visible only at the beginning of the trail, and the subject was asked to indicate the direction of the objects every 50 m (36 points X 50m). The P-test measured the differences on a map between the coordinates of the true location and coordinates marked by the subject Three groups (11 students, 6 middle-aged hikers, and 5 veteran hiker leaders) were tested. After instructing the subjects about the testing method and the locations of three landscape objects, the D-test was done on the trail in one direction and then P-and D-tests were done in the reverse direction. The D-test showed that perceived directions for the three groups were influenced by curves in the trail. In the first test, the variation within each group was large-a few subjects thought the land marks were in the opposite direction. In the subsequent test, in the reverse direction, variation in the D-test was reduced to + 10 degrees for veterans, but the variation in the other groups remained the same. The P-test suggested that there were three types of spatial orientation using a map: type-1 had a good ability to orient spatially, with an error less than 50m; type-2 had an accumulating error but an ability to correct the error using landscape objects; and type-3 had only an accumulating error, even with good landscape reference objects. The tests suggest that people lose their way because of an inability to determine the direction of landmarks that are no longer visible, and an inability to accurately locate their position on a map. | |||||
