In July 1842, three missionaries, Benjamin Brueyre, Claude Gotteland, and François Estève, came to Shanghai, China, to carry out missionary and scientific research activities in the Jiangnan Apostolic vicariate. During his work in China, Benjamin Brueyre also went to Shandong, Hebei and so on. Jesuits have been concerned with education. The French Jesuit missionaries made abundant accomplishments in Sinological research. In addition to translating some missionary-related works into Chinese, Father Benjamin Brueyre also had a three-volume Chinese-Latin dictionary . And the third one was published in Hengtang in 1857. The whole book is arranged according to the theme. It compares the vocabulary of Latin, Chinese phonetic notation and the writing of Chinese characters one by one.
