There are few studies about surfer knowledge and awareness of tsunami evacuation procedures. In this study, we conducted a national questionnaire survey on the web, asking surfers about their knowledge and awareness of tsunami evacuation. Throughout the analysis of the survey data, it is found that surfers have a chivalrous spirit and solidarity to alert other surfers of an evacuation. Also, surfers tend to give a hand to the elderly or disabled people. Their knowledge level of the mechanisms of tsunami is slightly above the general population but is insufficient. The questionnaire carried out in this study also served to increase knowledge/awareness of tsunami hazard maps, shelters locations, and the importance of participation in evacuation drills. More than half of the surfers in Kanagawa, Mie, and Wakayama think to evacuate by foot despite coming to beaches by car. The responses of surfers about their personal preparation time to evacuate indicates that their estimate of tsunami arrival time is later than the actual/assumed arrival time.}, pages = {61--80}, title = {津波避難に対するサーファーの意識の全国調査}, volume = {6}, year = {2016} }
