| 内容記述 | This paper explores the significance of dying process for Japanese people living in the late modernity, which urges us to question the fundamental presuppositions of modernity. For this purpose, the paper is divided into two parts. In the first part, depending on the research of two sociologists, Yasutsugu Ogura and Shimon Tashiro, it is examined how the progress of super aging is revealing some characteristics of Japanese dying process which might not be well understood by Western thanatology and death studies. In the latter part, two different construal of self, independent and interdependent, as cultural psychologists propose, are employed for a framework to further understand the cultural aspects of dying process. Then, as examples of independent self and interdependent self, an attitude of Socrates towards death and that of Buddha are compared. While Socrates's attitude towards death was a completion of his self-realization but missed the responsiveness of ethics to others, Buddha reflected on his attitudes towards death and developed the way for others to get out of the attachment to life and death. In conclusion, the dying process can be taken as a chance to further the reflectivity in the late modernity and go beyond the standardized way of life in the Japanese modern society. | |||||
