| 内容記述 | Ukishiro Monogatari (The Tale of the Floating Fortress, 1890) is an adventure story about a group of idealized young people who robbed a ship, crossed the ocean, and fought with local camarillas in order to expand Japanese territory. The story is full of vigor, and it stimulated high ideals in many young Meiji people. It was published in offprint on April 1890. At that time. Western countries were fighting for spheres of influence in Asian countries. Japanese intellectuals felt a strong sense of fear, and they were advocating national rights in trying to escape from western invasion. It received praise from many scholars soon after it was published. However, it was criticized by the literary critics Uchida Roan (1890) and Ishibashi Ningetsu (1890) also. Even though Yano Ryuukei's novels span over 20 years, there are various connections that show social and personal changes. In order to discuss the relationship among this novel and Yano Ryuukei's two other important novels, Keikoku Bidan (Young Politicians of Thebes, 1883) and The New Society (1902). This paper explores context, critiques and connection in the case of the Meiji scholar, Yano Ryuukei (1851-1931) and his novel Ukishiro Monogatari (The Tale of the Floating Fortress, 1890). | |||||
