内容記述 | Fujisawa Tōgai (藤澤東畡1794-1864) was a Confucian scholar and the founder of Hakuen Shoin (泊園書院), a private academy of Chinese studies based in Osaka during the latter part of Edo period Japan. Born in Sanuki (讃岐) on the island of Shikoku (四国), Tōgai studied under Nakayama Jōzan (中山城山 1763-1837), a well known Confucian scholar in the tradition of Ogyū Sorai’s (荻生徂徠 1666-1728) school. Tōgai would later leave Sanuki for Osaka, eventually opening Hakuen Shoin in 1825. Tōgai’s basic methodology of Chinese philosophical and philological research would be that of Ogyū Sorai’s Kobunjigaku (古文辞学) school. However he would also develop a number of theories and viewpoints that were unique to him and that would become further developed by succeeding generations of the Fujisawa family. One of the theories developed by Tōgai is the idea that there is a fundamental link between the original ideals of Confucianism and the intellectual and artistic flourishing of the Japanese state. Specifically, Tōgai believed that the ideals of Confucius were now only being carried out in Japan, and because of this Japan should be held in high regard. This idea of Japan’s superiority due to its adherence to Confucius’ ideal would become a central tenet of the Hakuen school. Tōgai expounded this theory in a treatise known as Genseishi (原聖志), or ‘An Inquiry into the Intent of the Sage’, the“sage”here referring to Confucius. This treatise, along with most of Tōgai’s works, have unfortunately been largely neglected by scholars of Japanese early modern Confucianism. This Japanese translation of Genseishi from the original Classical Chinese is an attempt to address this neglect, and it is hoped that it will promote further research into Fujisawa Tōgai’s thought and the Hakuen school. |
