| 内容記述 | The export of Pingsuey tea experienced remarkable fluctuations in the fiveports trading period, especially in the late 19th century. America became the major market for Pingsuey tea in 1875. In 1883, “An act to prevent the importation of adulterated and spurious Teas” was passed by the Senate and House of Representation. The act prohibited the importation of teas adulterated with foreign or exhausted leaves, as well as teas that were unfit for use due to the “admixture of chemicals or other deleterious substances.” However, Congress’s first attempt to regulate tea imports was widely considered unsuccessful. Because there were no standards, consistent enforcement of the 1883 Act was impossible. Moreover, On March 2, 1897, fourteen years to the day after the 1883 Act became law, Congress enacted “An Act To prevent the importation of impure and unwholesome tea”. This new Tea Importation Act constituted an overhaul of the regulatory system established through the 1883 Act. Changes in the Tea Imporation Act thereby directly impacted the exports of Pingsuey tea to the United States. | |||||
