内容記述 | Based on their experiences during the Second World War, Wols (1913-1951), Jean Fautrier (1898-1964) and Jean Dubufett (1901-1985) each exhibited works at the Rune Douran gallery. These works, using unique abstract expressions revealed the inner world of the self. Michel Tapié, a French art critic, inspired by the works of these three artists held an exhibition in 1951 titled Véhémences Confrontées. It was here that “Hot Abstract”, anti-representational paintings by George Mathieu (1921-2012), Jackson Pollock (1912-1956), and Willem de Kooning (1904-1997) were exhibited. Informel painting is an abstract painting style, where an artist attempts to express their self-possibility as it is on the canvas without relying on realistic and formalistic expressive techniques. Informel style, as advocated by Tapie, is a painting style that could be found in art circles all over the world during roughly the same period. This also includes East Asia. However, because the Informel style in East Asia has been criticized by Western art critics as being “an imitator of abstract expression”, most previous research on the Informel style in East Asia has focused on the influences of the West, and as a result the original aspects of these works have for the most part been neglected. This paper shall attempt to reveal these unique and original aspects of the Informel style by exploring the development of this art form in Japan, China and Korea. |
