| 内容記述 | Utagawa Kuniyoshi （1797‒1861） was an Ukiyo-e artist of the late Edo period,i.e. the 19th century, who worked on a variety of themes such as warriors, landscapes, and caricatures. When Kuniyoshi creates these works, he was referring to a works and iconography that exists around was revealed by recent studies. However, he did not only imitate existent works but also tried to establish his own style of representation. The purpose of this paper is to make clear that, in reference to the current world of painting, how Kuniyoshi chose his sources of influence and thereby developed his own ways of representation. In conclusion, although Kuniyoshi established himself as a professional painter through frequent contact with the contemporary art, his works represent a combination of the ukiyo-e style and newly imported Western techniques, opening a new way of the expression of motion. Furthermore, it is also suggested that Kuniyoshi’s later use of Western styles was a pursuit of realism on the one hand, and a compromise compelled by his illness on the other. | |||||
