| 内容記述 | Since the late 18th century, the British newspapers began to pay attention to the Qing China and Edo Japan. Through the coverage of the British news reports the image of the above two nations began to be known in a new light to the whole world. This article intends to research the transition of the images of these nations in Anglo-American news reports through the following two sections. The first section focuses on the Sino-Japanese image before 1840. On the part of Qing China attempts to controvert the negative impact of the “kow-tow” question issue on the early Anglo-Sino trade from the late 18th century to the early 19th century, taking the Macartney Embassy and the Amherst Embassy as the examples. On the part of Edo Japan intends to discuss the attitude of the Tokugawa Shogunate. The second section focuses on the Sino-Japanese image till 1860s. On the Chinese part mainly discusses the different versions and views upon the Chinese Government, forces and her subjects that the British scholars and merchants in China held during the first and second opium war. On the Japanese part intends to discuss and analyse the changing attitude of the Shogunate and her people towards the foreign civilized nations. | |||||
