 note = {The etymology and history of the Japanese/Chinese name Eigo/Yingyu for the English language has remained barely examined. This article will demonstrate that Eigo/Yingyu became the conventional name for English as late as in the second half of the nineteenth century, and that thitherto there were various names for English both in Japanese and in Chinese.
