The unification of spoken and written language after the May Fourth Movement was achieved upon this basis. This article carries out an analysis of the motivations of disyllabification which is different from previous research. It highlights how coordinative disyllabic compounds fulfilled an important role during the process of disyllabification, even though they do not possess an active meaning function.
