| 内容記述 | The purpose of this paper is to establish a perspective on the relationship between Rabindranath Tagore and the modern intellectual history of China. This attempt comes from an observation that current research on Tagore conducted by Chinese scholars is often too limited in problematiques. However, this is a historical phenomenon rooted in the specific cultural milieu in China in 1924 when Tagore visited there. The introduction reviews the history of Tagore studies in China and then points out the paradigm that most of those studies follow. Section 1 summarizes a 1920 conversation between Tagore and Feng Youlan and lays the groundwork for later analysis. Section 2 compares the thoughts of Tagore, Feng Youlan, and Liang Shuming, with a view to providing a philosophical alternative to the often ideology-ridden interpretations of the differences between Eastern and Western civilizations. Section 3 draws more Chinese intellectuals and some Westerners into discussion. By weaving their ideas with Tagore's, it is hoped that light can be shed on this episode in the modern intellectual history of China. The conclusion recapitulates the arguments and anticipates the future development of Tagore studies, both within and without China. | |||||
