The careful analysis of these records of Chinese painters and paintings will reveal the conditions of medieval cultural and commercial communication between China and Japan, the relevance of Chinese artists in Japan and, most importantly, illuminate the cultural impact and integration of Chinese and Japanese ideology.\n This paper develops the idea of reciprocity in trade and the exchange of thought between China and Japan. The spread of painting as a form of art differs from that of language and literature as the latter relies upon the use of words with strong historical and regional associations. Therefore, with the introduction of Chinese culture to Japan\nthrough writing, the Japanese encountered formidable diffi culties in absorbing elements of Chinese culture into their own as many concepts indigenous to China embodied in language eluded direct translation into Japanese.
