Also established in this essay is the influence of Raphael Collin, Pierre Puvis de Chavannes, and Ferdinand Hodler who originally influenced Kuroda and Fujishima Takeji with their use of mural characteristics. Focusing solely on the mural quality renders it possible to analyse those works that fall outside the kōsō painting mould, making it therefore possible to discover new perceptions in kōsō painting.
