It is believed that the edehon provided professional illustrators with the\nopportunity to study the techniques used in conservative Kanō school tradition, classical\npainting, and Chinese painting, to which they would have had little access, and\nincorporate these techniques into their own works.\n This essay focuses on ukiyoe, a representative print art of Edo-period mass\nculture, particularly the works of the Utagawa school of the late Edo period, in an\nattempt to present those pieces that suggest a reliance upon edehon.
