His study of Buddhism, Zen Buddhism history in particular, is an excellent example. Hu adopted scientific skepticism and a positivist approach in his research and attempted to study and understand Zen Buddhism in an historical context. This paper studies several aspects of Hu’s Buddhist study and elaborates on the important contributions he made to research methodology and the rediscovery of historical data.
