He based his work on the Chinese short story “Zuiun” that is part of a large 18th-century compilation of stories known as the “Ryōsai shi’i”. Ashihei incorporated and modified the original to meet his own unique interpretation of the modern novel. There is something remarkable in his discernment of humanity, and “Black Birthmarks on the White Faces” soundly critiques human opportunism.
