| 内容記述 | As the first English-language journal based in Canton (Guangzhou), The Chinese Repository was founded by E. C. Bridgman, the earliest American missionary to China. Although mainly China-centered, the journal gives some space to other countries surrounding China. There are 18 articles no less than a couple of pages devoted to Japan (including Ryukyu Islands) , some of which are eyewitness reports, others are either compilation, synthesis or translation of previous papers on Japan. Before the opening of Japan in 1853, western contributors to The Chinese Repository had been trying to obtain as much information about Japan as possible and to establish a communication channel with the Japanese, which is nowhere more clearly manifested than in these articles. This paper looks at the 18 pieces in a chronological order with special attention to their content, authorship and background, for the purpose of throwing a new light on relations among Japan, China, US and other western countries before the Perry expedition. | |||||
