 note = {During the author’s recent investigation at NARA (the National Archives and Records Administration) in Washington, D.C. of the log books of the Powhatan, the flagship that Commodore Perry used in his 1854 expedition to Japan, Captain William J. McCluney’s notes on the “two Japanese” stowaways were found in the Remarks on the Day of April 25th, and the time of getting aboard and being sent ashore recorded here corresponds to what Yoshida Shoin had recalled later in his reminiscence. The discovery of the face will certainly generates further interest among researches and general readers in this well-known “Shimoda story.”},
